Our History

About 2,000 years ago, Jesus told his disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” And since then, believers in Jesus have done just that. Our church has historical roots in Germany with Martin Luther and the Reformation 500 years ago. It has roots in Wisconsin as part of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (or WELS), which was founded over 150 years ago. And it has roots right in Reno, with its sister congregation, Shepherd of the Mountains, which has been around for over 40 years.

In order to carry out Jesus' great commission and reach and teach more people the good news of what Jesus has done to save us, about ten years ago, the members at Shepherd of the Mountains decided that they were going to start a new church in Sparks. That new church was soon named The Springs, and Pastor Hillmer was called to be the pastor of this new mission congregation. Pastor Hillmer and the members of Shepherd of the Mountains then began to reach out to the Sparks community. In 2008, we began worshiping at the Lazy 5 on Sunday mornings, beginning with just a few members. We later rented space on Isidore Court for a Ministry Center to have Bible Studies and other activities throughout the week.

By God's grace, our congregation has grown so much and in so many ways in the past 10 years. Since June 4, 2017, we now have our own church building and facilities at 470 Rockwell Boulevard. More importantly, we now serve 185 members with the good news of Jesus on a regular basis as well as many guests from the community. And we continue to do what Jesus instructed his followers to do over 2,000 years ago. We are still teaching what Jesus commanded and reaching out to those around us in our community to tell them about Jesus and what he's done, and we'd love to share more of that with you!
In addition, The Springs is also working with Shepherd of the Mountains to start another church in the Reno/Sparks area - this one, in the North Valleys. God-willing, we will soon be leasing property on Red Rock Road for a new church and calling another pastor who will serve many in the North Valleys with the good news of Jesus' perfect life and death for us to forgive all our sins and win heaven for us.

So, the history of The Springs is really a story of God's rich grace and bountiful blessings as he has kept his promise to be with us as we carry out his work.
